In de nacht van 12 op 13 december gaat Geoff Keighley voor de zesde keer van start met zijn grote prijzenshow. Elk jaar pakt hij het grootser en professioneler aan, iets wat terug te zien is aan het aantal kijkers van de show. In zowel 2017 als in 2018 zijn ze namelijk meer dan verdubbeld vergeleken met het jaar ervoor. Ook dit jaar belooft het een feestje te worden.

Net als de afgelopen jaren gaat de show vol zitten met aankondigingen, muziek en natuurlijk de prijzen. De afgelopen jaren waren er vanuit Nintendo altijd wel aankondigingen. Zo werd Joker voor Smash Ultimate vorig jaar aangekondigd en in 2017 verscheen de eerste teaser van Bayonetta 3.

Dit jaar zijn er bij The Game Awards 29 verschillende categorieën waarop gestemd kan worden. Vorig jaar waren het er dertig echter ontbreekt dit jaar de prijs voor het beste spel gemaakt door studenten. Van de 29 verschillende prijzen die uitgereikt worden, zijn er zeven voor esport en creators, de overige 22 zijn er om games te honoreren. In die laatste groep zijn er negen waarin een door Nintendo uitgebrachte game is genomineerd. In de categorie voor de beste familie game heeft Nintendo zelfs alle nominaties in handen. Gamers kunnen op twee manieren stemmen: via de officiële website of via Google.
